Award-winning 5 Star Accredited School

Mount Gravatt State High School, located in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Australia, has been awarded a 5-star Cleaner Greener School rating by the environmental movement Keep Queensland Beautiful. This prestigious recognition highlights the school's commitment to quality education, sustainability, and fostering a supportive learning environment.

The accreditation framework acknowledges schools for their dedication to sustainable practices across six key focus areas: Litter, Waste, Recycling, Water, Energy, and Biodiversity, contributing to a cleaner and greener future.

2012

Mt.Gravatt State High School in metropolitan Brisbane has been named the Keep Australia Beautiful 2012 “Greenest and Healthiest School” in Queensland.

Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Rick Burnett said Mt.Gravatt State High School was the outstanding school in most categories for 2012.

“It has successfully addressed litter, waste management, water and energy issues and has developed excellent partnerships to support and complement the educational programs,” Burnett said.

“It was also very pleasing to see the students taking ownership of the school’s activities and the submission, particularly the way the students addressed the environmental criteria for this award.”

Burnett said Mt Gravatt also promoted goodwill and “inclusivity” among students from non-English speaking backgrounds with signs and other forms of communication being multi-lingual.

Students were pro-active in other community roles, not only regarding the environment, but also in fundraising activities for welfare organisations like World Vision and RSPCA, and for this, they had won the category of “spirituality and values”.

The Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland “Green and Healthy Schools Program” started in 2000 and during its 12 years has had more than 300 Queensland schools registered.

Spirituality and Values

Stepping forward to help others in need, the Manual Arts department constructed outdoor sheds to donate to victims of the Brisbane Floods in 2011. This allowed students to develop their skills in construction while helping people who had lost so much. Also students raised funds for organisations including World Vision and the RSPCA, and promote these causes with many students doing voluntary work after they leave school.
