World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

First held in 1973, it has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues such as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.

World Environment Day is a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Mabo decision.

On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia made a ruling that established legal recognition of the Mabo family's ownership of their lands on the island of Mer in the Torres Strait.

Eddie Koiki Mabo did not live to see the decision, but he left a tremendous legacy, dispelling the myth of "terra nullius" and creating native title.

Native title is now recognised over more than 30% of Queensland.
